The benefits of unbalanced drilling (UBD) operations are well documented by several dozen offshore UBD operations. To date, underbalanced operations include gas wells drilled from jack-up rigs in the North Sea and in the US Gulf Coast shallow waters of several States as well as oil wells from barges in Lake Maracaibo and Venezuela. The method will also be applied soon from a semi-submersible in 580m of water depth in Brazil's Campos Basin. In another development, the US Department of Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) will soon start to receive applications for UBD in the US.
