The ever-improving capabilities of modern computing led the Deep Submergence Laboratory (DSL) at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to undertake a project for the digital mosaicking of underwater imagery. DSLs first mosaicking system was implemented on a Pixer image computer in 1990. However, this led to distortion of the image. DSL has now moved to mosaicking using commercially available software and desktop-class hardware. Custom batch image enhancement routines are used to preprocess raw image data, typically using adaptive histogram specification. The interactive mosaic formulation is performed within the bounds ot commercial software. The next generation of DSL mosaicking will utilize a full photogrammetric model for image registration.
