A swath bathymetry sonar is fixed to a survey vessel, or other survey platforms, pointing sideways relative to the direction of motion. As the vessel moves forward, it sweeps out an area of depth measurements. This area is called a swath and the technique is known as swath bathymetry. The term 'interferometry' is used to describe a class of sonar techniques. The applications of submetrix interferometric sonar systems in bathymetry are described.
