The Engineering, Test, and Evaluation (T&E) Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division (Newport, Rhode Island) (NUW-CDIVNPT) has developed an underwater acoustic telemetry at throughput rates of 900 and 1,800 bits/second. This report addresses the NUWC-DIVNPT design of the Underwater Digital Acoustic Telemetry (UDAT) system, the present and future applications of the system, and the efforts involved in moving acoustic telemetry from the laboratory bench into the arena of large applications.
