There is growing interest in western countries in the design of road public transport vehicles as a means of attracting and retaining passengers and improving the image of, in particular, the bus. This paper will review the available evidence that improved vehicle design can have this effect on bus use, before considering the technological feasibility of a specific innovation in vehicle propulsion. The paper will be divided into two sections. The first will review research which has been carried out to date on the design of buses and its effect on passenger perceptions and usage. In particular it will deal with access to the vehicle; interior layout; and emissions reduction measures, focusing in each case on evidence to indicate that improvements in these elements of vehicle design can have an impact on passenger perceptions and patronage. The second section of the paper will then discuss the feasibility of implementing hybrid engine technology in public transport vehicles. Developments in fuel cell technology and other hybrid configurations of bus propulsion will be reviewed. An assessment of current state-of-the-art drive train technologies will be made, together with an assessment of the likely dependence on developments in advanced batteries, to achieve an efficient means of public transport.
