Many small-to-medium-size fields could benefit from multiphase pumping technology. Unfortunately, until recently the costs of this technology could not be justified. And, if the initial costs could be justified, the cost to operate a multiphase pumping system was often considerably more than the cost to operate the more traditional separator, compressor, and pump system. The introduction of progressing cavity multiphase pumping systems has made multiphase pumping economically viable for many small-to-medium-size fields. This paper reviews one installation where a traditional installation was replaced by a progressing cavity pumping system and discusses the operating characteristics and benefits of the new pumping system. This paper also briefly describes progressing cavity technology in general and the development programs which resulted in the application of this technology to multiphase fluids pumping.
