Piping system used at elevated temperature suffers severe thermal expansion, and the restriction of thermal expansion stress Se to shakedown limit 3Sm in current design standards is one of the most critical items in piping design. More advanced evaluation procedure is desired to reduce piping length and cut plant cost. If the inelastic behaviour of a piping system under thermal expansion is predicted accurately, the integrity of piping system can be conserved without satisfying the Se limitation. In this paper, a piping design procedure against thermal expansion is proposed along with its background data. The design procedure is based on elastic analysis to predict inelastic behaviour of a piping system and local strain of pipe elements. A simplified inelastic analysis using elastic analysis with changing the stiffness of piping elements (elbows, etc.) is used to predict plastic and creep behaviours. Ratchetting strains and local strain ranges in pipe components are estimated by formulae using the results of the simplified inelastic analyses. Experiments and large deformation inelastic analyses have been carried out for elbows and straight pipes to generate the formulae. Comparison of the piping behaviour between the predictions and experiments is also introduced to validate the proposal.
