Mechanical fasteners are among the most common components in fabricated products. The proper selection of fasteners is necessary to provide the most value for the manufacturer as well as for the consumer. A variety of properties must be considered, including strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance. Fastener materials are primarily high strength steels, although some are made of aluminum and high-strength polymers. Many different types of fasteners are applied on automobiles. The most common types of fasteners are grouped into the following categories: bolts/screws, studs, pins, nuts, rivets, and holes with or without threads tapped into them.
