The paper describes a method of estimating residual lifetime of a pipeline with longitudinal surface cracks, subjected to pulsations of internal pressure. The development of the crack is described by nonlinear fracture mechanics. The kinetic equation of fatigue crack propagation is derived from the general equation for a 3D quasi-brittle body with a macrocrack along a certain surface subjected to a cyclic load. The constructed method is used to describe the growth of the semi-axes of the crack ellipse as a function of the number of load cycles N. The particular N at which the semi-axes tend to infinity is considered as the residual lifetime of the pipe. Using real statistical data on initial crack lengths for oil pipelines located in West Siberia, real properties of the material and of cyclic load, it is possible to estimate the residual lifetime and generate safe and economic repair plans for oil pipeline maintenance crews. The synthesized method is a part of an expert system for monitoring safety and residual life of oil pipelines.
