Titanium alloys are often readily joined by solid state processes such as friction welding and diffusion bonding, and as a result such processes are attractive in the development of manufacturing technologies for new titanium products. New solid state joining technologies are also being applied to titanium, leading to the potential for greater flexibility in future manufacturing. A particular case where joining is critical in the introduction of titanium to a new market area is considered. This is the joining of titanium pipes for the offshore industry, where the application of solid state welding can significantly reduce welding times. Although a substantial number of processes have been developed for this application, factors such as availability of technology, maturity, process economics and properties of welds must also be considered.
