Bunching of urban traffic is analyzed as a problem affecting pedestrian delay. A new model of pedestrian delay at a random point downstream of a signalized intersection in an urban area is formulated for vehicular traffic flow that has both bunched and random components. Traffic observations were taken at two sites on urban arterial roads in Sydney where pedestrian delay was measured. The pedestrian delay obtained from the model is compared with field measurements and with results of a simulation model. The influence of saturation flow and distance away from the signalized intersection on pedestrian delay is explored using the model and simulation results.
