Organic polymer based threads for applications in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) suffer significant erosion from the combined effects of Atomic Oxygen and Vacuum Ultraviolet radiation which compromise their mechanical and physical properties over time. Threads used to stitch Multi Layer Insulation blankets (MLI) have limited lifespans due to these environmental effects and alternative thread materials such as Teflon coated glass can be extremely difficult to sew. Triton Systems has developed twisted and braided sewing threads made from a unique polymer (TORTM) that are more durable than other competing materials in ground based testing conducted at Marshall Space Flight Center.
