The U.S. Air Force's Sacramento Air Logistics Center (ALC) has acquired a Laser Ultrasonic Inspection System (LUIS). This system has several features that make it superior to conventional systems such as noncontact inspection and the ability to easily scan parts with a small radius or other complex shapes. Boeing Information, Space and Defense Systems is currently on contract to the Air Force Research Laboratory to evaluate the performance of the LUIS as compared to conventional systems for the inspection of state of the art composite parts and other important aerospace parts. Sacramento ALC and Boeing have cooperatively inspected a number of standards and actual production parts. Data from LUIS inspections have been compared to conventional UT inspections. This paper summarizes the evaluation program, results to date and future evaluation plans.
