High-temperature bearing and gear alloys for the next generation of aircraft engines and transmissions require high surface hardness for wear resistance while maintaining a core with good fracture toughness, ductility, and impact toughness. To meet these challenges, two new stainless alloy have been developed at Latrobe Steel. The first alloy, CCS-42L, meets the ever-increasing demand for steels that can operate satisfactorily at elevated temperatures in bearings, gears, cams, shafts, and similar parts. This alloy can maintain high surface hardness at 427 degree C when carburized and heat treated. The other Latrobe alloy, 440-DUR, is a through-hardening alloy that is superior to 440C in corrosion resistance, uniformity of carbide distribution, and hardness.
