A polyethylene-based coating has been developed for corrosion protection of buried pipelines. The coating is designed to be applied in most existing coating plants using a spray-applied liquid epoxy primer and a multifunctional polyethylene laminate. The laminate is applied in the solid state to the preheated, epoxy-primed pipe and fused immediately by residual heat in the pipe. The result is a monolithic coating with no mastic-like components. This article describes the coating construction, application technique, and results of laboratory tests.
