Using the EPA database, a quantitative estimate of the impact of increasing vehicle weight and power on vehicle efficiency generated. Existing gasoline powered internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles were compared to series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell vehicles (FCVH2) storing hydrogen onboard, fuel cell vehicles with reformers (FCVR) for gasoline fuel, and advanced natural gas vehicles (NGV). It was found that each of the alternatives has at least one virtue that is often overemphasized. A fairer assessment from the well to the road showed that many claims of superior efficiency are ill founded.
