The use of the thermionic/alkali metal thermal to electric converter (AMTEC) cell has proven to be a promising candidate for space power applications. From a thermal viewpoint, the integration of thermionics and AMTEC energy conversion are ideal for cascaded power conversion because the thermionic heat rejection and AMTEC heat source temperatures are essentially the same. The mechanical approaches, thermal/electric matching criteria for the integration and solar thermal space power applications and parametric trends are presented to show the performance and cost potential that should be achievable with present-day technology.
