A number of high-strength steel sheet containing large volume fraction of retained austenite are studied for absorption, using hat square columns and dynamic crash testing. It is shown that these steels provide about 10% increase in energy absorption and also about a 40% larger elongation than that of conventional steel sheets. Because the retained austenite steel sheets undergo more transformations in the relatively low strain range, they show higher work hardening characteristic and better strain propagation performance. It is also shown that austenite steel sheets can be successfully applied to practical use in vehicles.
