A new programmed heat activated foam that provides its own directional control during expansion to eliminate the need of sandwich design is introduced. The directional control of the foaming drastically improves the sealing reliability by driving the foam toward sharp channel corners that are otherwise difficult to access. The foaming dynamics are studied inside a model channel in order to illustrate the difference between programmed and conventional foams.
