A new technique with potential for providing desired surface characteristics on cylinder for surfaces is LISI, a patent pending technique which uses a laser to incorporate precursor materials into a variety of substrates. Because the laser is very controllable, high intensity energy source, LISI is capable of producing layers with a wide variety of material combinations. The application of LISI includes the melting of both precursor material and substrate with the laser, convective mixing of the materials, and rapid cooling solidification.
