A chassis test has been developed to mimic the engine certification test for purposes of screening for emissions degradation. The chassis procedure involved testing with the vehicle set in one gear, following a chassis-based mapping of the vehicle. A Navistar engine was emissions tested, then installed in an International single drive axle truck, which was then emission tested. Similarly, a Cummins engine and International tandem tractor were studied. The engines were used in both stock and tampered modes to provide a variety of emissions levels. The results show that the approach provides an accurate screening approach for NOx and an acceptable approach for PM.
