The purpose of this paper is to establish the sources of HC emissions from this ultra-lean burn engine. The investigation includes flame imaging and transient studies of HC concentration within the exhaust port, HAJI prechamber and the wall layer region. Hydrogen Assisted Jet Ignition (HAJI) is a novel method maintaining combustion stability during ultra-lean operation of conventional, homogeneously charged, SI engines. The results suggest that wall quench is the dominant mechanism contributing to the rise in engine out HC emissions and not the HAJI device nor combustion chamber devices.
