At Honda, the two functions of improving shift quality and fail safe at high speed were formerly dependent on conventional one-way clutches. Just recently, the car manufacturer has developed a new technology that guarantees these functions using three alternate methods namely, centrifugal hydraulic cancellation mechanism, direct hydraulic control system and new shift logic hydraulic circuit. The new technology makes possible to eliminate the 1-2 one-way clutch and 1st gear holding clutch, thus shortening the overall length for the new AT by 22 mm and reducing the number of parts used by 76.
