The Toronto marine geophysics group develops methods to determine the electrical conductivity of the sea floor with the aim of detecting, mapping and assessing mineral deposits. The research process is the identification of a relevant target; the analysis of its probable electrical properties; the selection of an appropriate electromagnetic method; the construction of apparatus; the measurement of data at sea; the development of state-of-the-art numerical computer algorithms for analysis; the interpretation to a geological model using multi-disciplinary information. We review a recent example, a survey of the TAG mound on the mid-Atlantic ridge, made using innovative transient electric dipole-dipole instrumentation and the deep-diving, manned submersible ALVIN.
