Electric vehicles (EVs) have been suggested to cut vehicle exhaust pollution and improve inner-city air quality. The operation of EVs however can involve complex battery charging procedures in order to ensure maximum safety and to prolong equipment life. The limited energy storage of the EV battery means the charge connection has to be made very frequently. This paper describes the design of a 10 kW inductive coupling mechanism to provide easy and efficient EV battery recharging with no intervention from the user. The inductive coupling overcomes the safety concerns associated with conventional conductive couplings and with appropriate control extra benefits such as opportunity charging can be utilised to extend the vehicle range and payload. Finite element analysis software has been used to produce a magnetic model of the inductor cores. The power circuits, inductor cores and lead acid battery have been electrically simulated using PSpice. Results show that the required power can be transferred to the vehicle batteries across a significant air gap at efficiencies matching those of conventional conductive battery chargers.
