This paper deals with the design and implementation of an induction motor with a dual air-gap, axial-flux configuration for a prototype of an experimental electric vehicle. This type of motor has two stators and a squirrel cage on each face of centred rotor topology. Firstly, the design considerations of the electric propulsion systems are reviewed and the basic layout of the proposed drive system is presented. Secondly, a number of machine design considerations and structures are described. Then the main steps of calculation for a disc motor are given. Thirdly, magnetic and electric equivalent circuits of such configuration are derived and analyzed by using numerical field techniques. Finally, the most relevant characteristics of a 1.6 kW motor prototype are discussed.
