Since production commenced in the gas wells of the Zhongyuan oil field in China, serious internal corrosion of oil tubulars has taken place. This has manifested itself through failures owing to corrosion pitting and cracking that have directly affected normal production from the wells. The failed tubes were studied by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. Carbon dioxide, aqueous condensate, and NaCl are the primary factors responsible for the severe corrosion of oil tube steels in the gas wells. The extent of non-metallic inclusions (MnS, Al2O3, and their complexes) in oil tubes exceeded the limit prescribed in the national material standard and this contributed to the acceleration of failure owing to localized corrosion and cracking of oil pipes in the media containing CO2, which resulted in honeycomb corrosion in tubing from the WEN 23-1 gas well and in groove corrosion in tubing from the WEN 23-8 gas well. Laboratory studies showed that the use of absorbing organic inhibitors is an effective way to prevent CO2 corrosion in gas wells. Particulary the one designated HB, were effective in suppressing the corrosion of carbon steel in CO2 saturated salt solution.
