A discrete optimization of ship structures is presented. The constrained minimization problem for least cost ship structures is transform ed into an unconstrained maximization problem by adding exterior penalty fimctions. The optimization of the resulting 'fitness function' is performed by a simple genetic algorithm using the operators of reproduction, crossover, and mutation. All design variables are discrete just as in practical design. Each one is represented by a binary string coding its discrete values. Numerical examples demonstrate that the method is efficient and practical for optimizing ship structures.
