Friction and wear of hatch cover supports are especially troublesome for container ships, which have low torsional rigidity, leading to extensive relative movements between hatch covers and hatch coamings. To predict the life of hatch cover supports subject to wear, the sliding path was measured on board of a large container ship during a 3-year period. Statistical data on the relative movements and the sliding path was gathered. Wear coefficients of different support materials were obtained from experiments carried out using a three-dimensional oscillating apparatus. Interesting phenomena of the steel and PTFE compounds' frictional behaviour were investigated, among them the frictional coefficients of plane movements and the influence of water and the steel mate's roughness on wear coefficients of PTFE compounds. The wear coefficient of a steel/steel rubbing pair depends on the amplitude of the oscillation. Approximate formulas are given to estimate wear of hatch cover supports.
