This paper presents a numerical analysis technique for predicting welding induced distortion of thin-walled stiffened ship panels. The investigation is restricted to the effects of single-pass fillet welds joining the through-plate and the stiffeners. The computational approach is verified by experimental measurements. The calculations presented in this paper demonstrate that shell elements are very effective in thee therm mechanical simulation of welding processes in thin-walled stiffened panels, for which angular distortion are of little significance compared with the effects of buckling. However, modeling of heat source movement is computationally very expensive. This paper presents an efficient analysis technique for predicting welding induced distortion. The technique is based on a simultaneous heat input along all welds, which was already proposed by Rohr (j996). This model facilitates an accurate prediction of longitudinal shrinkage including buckling effects. In addition, transverse shrinkage is taken into account by an 'artificial' compression of the weld region by means of spring elements. An accurate implementation of the presented technique can be used as a design tool for the evaluation and minimization of welding distortions of thin-walled structures.
