UV curing technology is now used to provide high performance coatings to a range of materials and parts. The automotive industry has demanding specifications for coatings notably: weathering performance, abrasion resistance, adhesion, and chemical resistance. The challenge for coating formulators has been to develop systems that can withstand these harsh conditions. This has been achieved by careful selection of the resins and monomers used in the coatings, and the incorporation of sophisticated packages of light stabilisers and photoinitiators to protect the polymers against degradation and activate the crosslinking process. Lamp configuration is the critical element of a successful UV curing process for complex three-dimensional shapes. Combining some of the advantages of powder coating with UV curing technology offers immense potential to the automotive industry. By using UV energy to cure powder coating, the meltflow and final curing stages in the coating process are separated. Heating of the powder particles with IR radiation produces a smooth film, then subsequent exposure to UV radiation activates the cross-linking reaction.
