A method permitting the measurement of air pollutant flows of urban areas with tethered baloon soundings has been introduced. A first comparison with NOx emission rates of an urban area estimated on the basis of inquiries and models revealed a good conformity. Using additional airship and aircraft measurements, a further experiment has been carried out to determine the horizontal extent and concentration distribution of the plume with higher accuracy, which has only been estimated so far. However, this comparison requires a more precise temporal resolution of the calculated emission rates. In the experiments carried out in March and October 1998 in Augsburg all these frame conditions have been determined as precisely as possible, for the first time permitting an experimental verification of emission models in this way. Within this experiment flow rates of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and carbon monoxide (CO) will be determined too.
