Epoxy-bonded, continuous fiberglass tether has been developed to moor observation balloon at altitudes of over 60,000 ft; this requires single piece of tether about 20 mi long, having strength to weight ratio of nearly 5×106in.; tether breaking strength was determined as function of time under load, rate of load application, and length under test; full length tethers have been produced; flight tests have not reached design altitude, but experience indicates that such flights are feasible; in addition to uses as marine towing and mooring line, tether has shown promise as structural unit both in tension and compression.
