The identification procedures, suggested in the paper for friction forces of traction systems, represents an useful way for evaluating the 'state' of the system self and makes besides possible a 'sensorless' evaluation of the time of incoming skid, because the time is characterised by a sudden change in friction forces. The same procedure applied to a largescale experimental tests, leads us to find a very simple analytical law which approximates friction forces by means of elementary functions of both speed and slip. For this purpose authors have dsigned and made manufactured a scale-model of a train. By means of this model they have simulated different operating conditions of a train both a steady-state and in dynamics. The model is considered an useful tool for improving the knowledge of skid phenomena and for preliminary validation of proper control techniques for traction drives.
