In development of a modernised coastal service vessel, a new type of a navigation support system (SUPER BRIDGE-X) including voice input/output function as user friendly man-machine interface is advised on the basis of research and development. According to the results of a ship operation simulator experiment, a oneman bridge system with a navigation support system was modelled, which takes roles of two crewmembers, a lookout man for monitoring radar and a quarter master, among the three man watch. The functional requirements are as follows: (1) Easy access to information and control for ship handling, (2) automatic navigation information service, (3) hazard avoidance support, (4) user friendly man-machine interface and (5) watchkeeper monitoring. In SUPER BRIDGE-X, various oral orders, inquiries and replies, reports and alarms are possible. About 80 patterns are prepared as oral replies, information, reports and alarms and about 30 patterns as oral orders and inquiries, which are inevitable for a watch officer to monitor navigation condition and operate the ship without touching the system in one-man bridge operation. In case of application design for speech recognition function on board, the following conditions should be considered: (1) Several watch officers shall input their speech by turns, (2) because there is little time for shift of watch, it shall be very difficult for each watch officer to register his speech feature in the system every time, (3) this function shall be used under environment with high noise level. On this account, the speech recognition system was adopted, which enables speaker independent speech recognition with high recognition performance. The recognition method is based on 'demisyllable unit' as a recognition unit, and this method realises large vocabulary speech recognition applicable to practical use in navigation support. Because the voice input function includes control of the ship's course and speed, in the designing stage measures to ensure the reliability of speech recognition are developed, for example: the system always replies for confirmation to course or speed order or oral interruption of course or speed alternation is possible.
