Estimation scheme based on the state and input observer for wheelbase preview control is presented. Compared with Kalman filter based approach, the proposed estimation scheme imposes additional requirements on measurement signals but allows the steady state optimal gain, which can be computed offline and hence greatly reduces the computational burden. Simulations of a half car model have been performed to compare performance of SIO based control with that of Kalman filter based control. The result shows that SIO based control has performance comparable to that of Kalman based control although it has higher sensitivity to measurement noise. It was also shown that SIO based control gives satisfactory performance under incidental road condition as well as under stochastic road condition. If required signals can be measured in real applications, wheelbase preview control based on the proposed estimation scheme is expected to improve the active suspension performance with no additional hardware requirement and minimal computational burden increase.
