Over the past three decades, thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) have enjoyed phenomenal growth in the non-tyre segment of the automotive rubber products industry, with almost equal to 8 kg of these materials in each new motor vehible; TPEs have practical advantages and disadvantages when compared to conventional thermoset rubber. Thermoplastic vulcanisates (TPVs) are a class of TPEs resulting from the dynamic vulcanisation of a rubbery polymer-thermoplastic combination to give a fine dispersion of highly vulcanised rubber particles in a continuous matrix of thermoplastic. Several large volume automotive applications of TPVs under demanding service requirement are discussed in detail. The prime motivator behind these TPV uses has been cost reduction with no decrease in performance.
