The automobile is one of today's most recycled products. And steel is the engine that drives automobile recycling in North America. More than 200 ferrous scrap yards with shredders operating in Canada and the United States shred millions of out-of-service automobiles each year to magnetically separate and recover the steel. In 1996 alone, more than 12 million tons of shredded ferrous automobiles were shipped to steel mills to be melted down and turned into new steel products. Comparing the amount of steel sold to make new cars to the amount of steel recycled from old cars, the automobile recycling rate was approximately 98 %. This presentation will discuss the present and possible future states of automobile recycling in North Amerika, and highlight some of the steel industry's efforts to maintain steel's share of the automobile market.
