In the beginning of 1996 an experimental program was founded by the German government. The research work is sponsored by the German ministry of economics under the sign WiL 9502 B. Its aim was, to improve flight safety by supporting new developments for the general aviation. The main goal within this program is to develop cockpit avionics, based on new technologies for aircraft operating under visual flight rules. It is kept in mind, that the developed avionics should be open for future expansions like data link, ads-b etc. The second major goal is to create a full flight simulator for this class of aircraft, which should be used as a development-tool for the avionics components, too. A third part of the project is to adapt the training procedures to the new cockpit for an efficient and straight forward training of future pilots. All in all, this program offers the chance for the development of Free Flight infra structure for the general aviation at comparatively low costs. One very important part of the project is the introduction of data recording aboard of general aviation aircraft. To show the large step, that is taken in this project, the whole project and its surroundings will be presented.
