Motor vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are today developing technically advanced, highquality products for serial production in increasingly shorter timeframes. The ever more demanding constraints on time and cost make it essential to have an efficient product development process. State-of-the-art simulation tools supporting all phases of product development are needed in order to prevent the development process moving in the wrong direction, to optimise components and systems, and to minimise the costly and timeconsuming process of experimental prototype testing. In this connection it is important that, as far as possible, individual simulation tools are coordinated with one another and directly integrated into the individual phases of the product development process. Using the development of a car air-conditioning system as an example, illustrations are given of the processes developed at Behr GmbH & Company for simulating the function of the cooling system, the air-conditioning unit, the componentry and the vehicle interior, along with the logical linking between them and their incorporation into the development process. Specific examples show the potential of rational and fully integrated predictive engineering for saving on both time and costs.
