The authors studied two methods for estimating the slope of roads on running vehicles with automatic transmissions. One was the acceleration sensor method and the other was the kinetic equation method. The acceleration sensor method was simple and estimated the road slope value accurately but it was expensive because an additional acceleration sensor is needed. The kinetic equation method was a little complicated and estimated the road slope value with less accuracy than the former method but it was not expensive because no additional sensor is needed. The authors confirmed that the kinetic equation method could estimate accurately enough to avoid shift change trouble. The authors confirmed control to avoid needless shift-up was possible using the above road slope estimation.
