In this paper a time-domain analysis for the two-dimensional flow around a slightly submerged hydrofoil is presented. Large separation phenomena and cavitation are ruled out and the flow field is described in terms of inviscid-rotational fluid mechanics in which a thin vortical layer mimics the wake hydrofoil and a suitable unsteady Kutta condition provides the mechanism for vorticity generation. The velocity field is described through an integral representation in terms of the velocity component on the free surface, source and vorticity distribution on the hydrofoil and the wake vorticity. Free surface boundary conditions which hold in the general rotational case are derived from the Euler equations and the nonlinear free surface dynamics is fully retained. The model is successfully applied to test cases for which staedy regime experimental data are available. Good agreement is generally obtained for wave forms, wave drag and pressure distribution on the foil. The free-surface treatment appears accurate enough to describe some aspects of the kinematics of breaking waves generated by shallowly submerged hydrofoils.
