A disturbance decoupled observer for semi-active suspension control was presented. It has been shown that all states of a semi-active suspension can be estimated with good accuracy by the proposed observer. The suspension velocity and the tire deflection (the dynamic tire force) can be estimated in an exponentially stable manner. The sprung mass and unsprung mass velocities can be estimated without the effects of D.C. offsets. The performance of the observer has been verified via simulations and experimental studies. Semi-active controllers using estimated states were implemented on the quarter car test rig. It has been shown that the performance of the suspensions can be improved using the observer-based semi-active suspension controller.
