The OBD (On Board Diagnose) II law, which was published in the United States in 1989, states that misfires in combustion engines have to be detected online. One approach to solve this problem is to detect misfires by using knock sensors. Actually, the sensors are only tasked with detecting knocking combustion. The signals detected by these sensors represent engine vibration. When an engine ignition occurs this is identified by a characteristical peak contained within the detected engine vibration signal. During periods of high engine speed, these ignition peaks are swamped by noise. This paper introduces a new method of noise suppression with the so-called 'cumulative mean' method. The cumulative mean method is similar to the autocorrelation function. However, the overlapping elements are not multiplied but summed up and scaled with a shift dependent factor. In addition to the mathematical study of the features of the cumulative mean it will be shown, how it is possible to perform confidential aftertreatment for misfire detection.
