Automobile ergonomics is an emerging need strictly dependent from the extremely quick diffusion of cars as transport mean and environment to be lived. In particular the seat is the element which greatly influences driver and passengers comfort. Therefore it is much important to improve manufacturing criteria in order to assure both comfort and safety. New tools have to be developed to aid the designers to analyse and to evaluate the influence of materials, shape, and structural elements on the driver's comfort. The new possibilities offered by technological progress must be integrated in the design and evaluation processes. In this frame, a methodological approach integrating data from the analysis of driver's posture with the seat characteristics as described by shape and pressure map can offer new interesting information for the development of new products responding to ergonomical requirements. The data analysis allows for the definition of some new interesting parameters to characterize the seat function and performance and the sitting posture. Among these, the relationship between pressure and interpenetration could represent a predictive model for pressure distribution from the back surface. This is to be confirmed by a wider analysis and it could bring to new instruments for designing or virtual evaluation of seat prototypes (Virtual prototyping and Proactive Ergonomics).
