The objective of the UltraLight Steel Auto Body (ULSAB) economic analysis was to establish a credible cost estimation of the ULSAB body structure, by using automotive practices of process engineering and cost estimation. Also the cost estimatimation had to be in a format, to allow users to adopt to their own environment and to be able to compare the cost of existing or potential future body structures to ULSAB structure. Phase 2 of the ULSAB project has come to its conclusion with the build of the demonstration hardware. The test results are remarkable, and a high levels of structural performances provide an excellent basis for a complete vehicle development. With respect to safety, the ULSAB crash analysis has shown that reducing the body structure mass, using high strength steel, in various grades and applications, such as tailor welded blanks does not result in an unsafe vehicle. In addition the results of the economic analysis has shown that a lightweight structure can be built with no cost penalty.
