Of the many demands placed on the automotive air conditioning system, ensuring visibility through the windshield, the main function of defroster, is an important requirement for passenger safety. As clear-up pattern, which is the pattern of frost or mist elimination, is a very important design consideration for the high performance defroster, many methods to predict clear-up pattern have been developed which are based on computational fluid dynamics. However, as these methods either do not consider the effect of heat transfer or solve the problem as an unsteady state flow under the complicated boundary conditions for flow and heat transfer, there seems to be room for improvement in terms of balancing accuracy and calculation time. This paper attempted to develop a practical method for predicting clear-up pattern by calculating fluid and heat transfer at steady state. As a result, a method was developed which predicts clear-up pattern accurately with a relatively shorter calculation time.
