Virtual Reality (VR) is starting to be accepted as a business tool in industry, especially in the automotive industry. The growing importance of digital prototypes/virtual prototypes affords an efficient process and also adequate systems for the presentation of the virtual prototypes. The paper discusses tools and methods which are used in virtual work environments and which permit information to be obtained on the product in early development phases offer attractive optimization potentials (time, costs, quality) in engineering. Here, among other things, product aspects and product features are in the foreground which essentially permit qualitative information to be obtained (e.g. formal aspects) and product features which can be primarily assessed by evaluation (e.g. motion spaces in connection with capability of assembly). For so doing, the interaction of man with the virtual prototypes and their perception and immersion of man in the virtual work environment is decisive for handling the tasks on hand.
