Adhesion failure of automotive coatings by humidity influence is very rare in practice, but very severe if it occurs. The processes that lead to this type of delamination are not well unterstood. To be on the safe side, car manufactures specify extensive tests that are sometimes difficult to reproduce. The aim of this study was the clarification of the delamination mechanisms by physical measuring techniques. It turned out that wet adhesion can become a problem, if the primer layer has a high water storage capacity. It can be improved if the adjacent basecoat layer acts as a 'blotting paper' and facilitates the release of water from the multilayer coating.
