In the near future the importance of passenger vehicles with electrical drive train components will increase. The California Air Resources Board requires that beginning in 2003 and beyond ten percent of all new vehicles sold in California be zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). Currently, the only technology capable of meeting the ZEV requirements is the battery-powered electric vehicle. The test results of new developed hybrid vehicles are showing that effected from the combined operation of the IC-Engine and battery storage, vehicle emissions can be reduced very effectively. The promising developments of fuel cells, suitable for use in passenger vehicles will increase demand for electric drives. Additionally these vehicles have a very comfortable drive performance because there is no traction force interruption while the vehicles are driven by electric drives with constant gear ratio over the total speed range. Consequently a lot of development activities are focused on electric drive train components with special features. New electric drives which are characterized by high power densities and efficiencies based on sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets have been developed. The Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets offer due to their high remanence and coercivity, a large potential for high performance drives. This potential is most effectively exploited by anisotropic sintered magnets. In this paper the capabilities of the application of high energy permanent magnets will be proved by presentation of new designs of synchronous motors. During development and production of the drive system a close co-operation between the motor manufacturer and the magnet manufacturer is essential. The developed assembly package of special electric drives, meanwhile can be found in many electric and hybrid vehicles and this allows for mass production although at present customer orders are low. This presentation is divided into two parts. Part 1 deals with electric drives and has been prepared by the electric motor manufacturer Mannesmann Sachs AG. Part 2 which concerns permanent magnets was prepared by the magnet manufacturer Vacuumschmelze GmbH.
